{"id":104636,"date":"2025-08-11T10:13:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T07:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/etag2025.etag.ee\/research-culture\/research-integrity\/mitmekesisuse-nadal\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T09:05:30","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T06:05:30","slug":"diversity-week","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/etag.ee\/en\/research-culture\/gender-mainstreaming-in-research\/diversity-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Diversity Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"classic-editor\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">Every May, Diversity Month is celebrated in Estonia and across Europe, aiming to highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">To promote diverstiy and inclusion in academia, Estonia\u2019s public universities- the University of Tartu, Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn University, the Estonian University of Life Sciences, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, and the Estonian Academy of Arts are co-organising&nbsp;<strong>Diversity Week<\/strong>&nbsp;annually, on the second week of May. In 2025, Diversity Week will take place on&nbsp;<strong>May 5-11<\/strong>, and is organised together with the Estonian Research Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">The focus of this year\u2019s Diversity Week is on building&nbsp;<strong>intervention culture<\/strong>. Why is it important to intervene, and how should it be done? The week will provide both food for thought as well as practical tips on how to respond to workplace bullying, misconduct, and\/or unequal treatment in academia. The week will also remind the role of universities and research-funding organizations in ensuring a safe learning and working environment for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large wp-el\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"733\" src=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Julge-sekkuda_FB-urituse-pais-1400x733.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4051\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Julge-sekkuda_FB-urituse-pais-1400x733.webp 1400w, https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Julge-sekkuda_FB-urituse-pais-960x503.webp 960w, https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Julge-sekkuda_FB-urituse-pais.webp 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">The week kicks off on&nbsp;<strong>Monday, May 5<\/strong>, with a&nbsp;<strong>joint&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/sI-lCXcfqPM?feature=share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video message<\/a>&nbsp;from students<\/strong>, highlighting the importance of developing intervention culture and how members of academia can help create a safer and more caring learning and working environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">The same day,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Julge-sekkuda_148X315-mm_VOLDIK_b3mm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Julge-sekkuda_148X315-mm_VOLDIK_b3mm.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>practical guidelines<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will be introduced, designed to help people understand the importance of intervention. Developed by equality and HR experts from universities, the guide offers clear and user-friendly instructions on how to respond when witnessing misconduct or unequal treatment. The<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Julge-sekkuda_148X315-mm_VOLDIK_b3mm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Julge-sekkuda_148X315-mm_VOLDIK_b3mm.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidelines<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0as well as the \u201cDare to act\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Julge-sekkuda-plakat-A3-A4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/etag.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Julge-sekkuda-plakat-A3-A4.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>poster<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0are welcome to be used also in other organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">On&nbsp;<strong>Tuesday, May 6, from 11:00 to 12:30 EET<\/strong>, a&nbsp;<strong>webinar<\/strong>&nbsp;will be held on English on Microsoft Teams by&nbsp;<strong>Fredrik Bondestam<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Sociology at Uppsala University and Director of the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research at the University of Gothenburg. In his presentation, Bondestam will focus on ending gender-based violence in universities and research institutions, discussing the role of universities and research funders and sharing international experiences. The event will be recorded and made available for later viewing on the&nbsp;<strong>Estonian Research Council\u2019s YouTube channel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">On&nbsp;<strong>Wednesday, May 7, from 10:00 to 12:00 EET<\/strong>, a&nbsp;<strong>public discussion<\/strong>&nbsp;titled&nbsp;<em>\u201cDare to Intervene: Why and How?\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;will take place at the Baltic Film, Media, and Arts School of Tallinn University. The discussion will focus on the practical aspects of intervention. Experts will explain why people are often hesitant to intervene and provide guidance on how to do so effectively and safely. The aim is to give the audience the confidence, knowledge, and practical tools to take action when they see bullying, harassment, or injustice. The discussion will be moderated by&nbsp;<strong>Elina Kivinukk<\/strong>, psychologist and Equal Treatment Representative at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Speakers include&nbsp;<strong>Triin Toomesaar<\/strong>, former head of the foundation Kiusamisvaba kool (Bullying-Free School);&nbsp;<strong>Johan Pastarus<\/strong>, mental health consultant at the Labor Inspectorate; and&nbsp;<strong>Helina Loor<\/strong>, visiting lecturer at Tallinn University and learning designer at the Kaljulaid Foundation. The event will be streamed live online and will also be available for later viewing on the Estonian Research Council\u2019s YouTube channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading wp-el\">Diversity Week 2024: \u201cDiverse Estonian Universities\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, Diversity Week was held from&nbsp;<strong>May 6 to 12<\/strong>. The week was started off with a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZWG_Xq1bAEE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint video statement<\/a>&nbsp;by the rectors of Estonia\u2019s public universities<\/strong>&nbsp;in which they emphasized that universities must provide a good learning and working environment for everyone, and that the academic community should be supportive, inclusive, and value cultural diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">Following the video statement, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u5iyJ0JfVRE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>panel discussion on diversity in universities<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;took place, moderated by journalist&nbsp;<strong>Johannes Tralla<\/strong>. Participants included&nbsp;<strong>Kadri Aavik<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Gender Studies (Tallinn University);&nbsp;<strong>Marko L\u00f5hmus<\/strong>, Senior Lecturer in Cultural Management (Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre);&nbsp;<strong>Raili Marling<\/strong>, Professor of English Studies (University of Tartu);&nbsp;<strong>Tanja Muravskaja<\/strong>, artist and head of the Digital Printing Centre (Estonian Academy of Arts); and&nbsp;<strong>Merle Ojasoo<\/strong>, Associate Professor in Organization and Management (TalTech).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-el wp-block-paragraph\">Each day of the week, the&nbsp;<strong>Gender Equality and Equal Treatment Commissioner\u2019s social media channels and ETV2<\/strong>&nbsp;featured a&nbsp;<strong>short lecture on a relevant topic<\/strong>. Speakers included the Commissioner for Equal Treatment Christian Veske, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Aune Valk (University of Tartu), musicologist Brigitta Davidjants (Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre), Professor of Photography Marge Monko (Estonian Academy of Arts), Associate Professor Merle Ojasoo (TalTech), and Associate Professor of Sociology Triin Roosalu (Tallinn University).
